or should I say "Oi amigos"? :-)
I had been lucky enough to get my fingers on a few Brazilian sweets last week and I decided to share my delicious experience with you.
I will try to talk a bit about the taste and the ingredients and hopefully I will inspire you to try those when you go to Brazil or if you just stumble upon some of those in your local Brazilian shop.
1. Paçoquinha de Amendoim
Paçoca or paçoquinha is a traditional Brazilian candy originated in Brazilian state Minas Gerais.
It is usually made out of grounded peanuts (amendoins), sugar and salt.
I think it is my most favourite candy out of all that I have tried. It is very soft with a dry texture.
I heard it is also very popular during Festa Junina (Brazilian festival celebrated in June), therefore if you go to Brazil during this time, don't miss this deliciousness and give it a try! And it is gluten free! :-)
2. Doce de Leite
This sweet paste is not only famous in Brazil, but I believe that you can find it everywhere throughout the South America.
It is made out of milk and sugar. It is also quite easy to cook at home so if you don't have an access to the store-bought version. Mix milk and sugar until it dissolves. Then put it t boil and keep stirring until the mixture is reduced and thickened. Let it cool down and enjoy it! :-)
3. Bananinha
Bananinha is a soft jellylike candy made out of bananas and sugar.
This one is my least favourite of all because it is very sweet. I also couldn't taste the bananas much. But maybe it will suit your taste so give it a try. I was told that people usually make this candy during Festa Junina. It is gluten free!
4. Doce de amendoim
I think that you can probably find a similar candy anywhere in the world.
It is basically a bar made out of peanuts and sugar. It is still pretty delicious, so if you find it in your local shop, give it a try. It is also gluten free!
5. Goiabada
Goiabada is a kind of jam made out of guava fruit sugar and water.
It is traditionally eaten with a special fresh cheese from Minas Gerais state. I didn't have this exact cheese to eat it with but I bought a kind of fresh cheese in Tesco and I tried it with it. OMG, I didn't expect that it would be so yummy. This dessert is called Romeo e Julieta and you definitely need to try it. The sweetness of the jam is balanced by the saltiness / sourness of the cheese. Although I have to say that I ate way too much of it and my stomach felt a bit heavy afterwards. So enjoy it with moderation.

This is not my picture because I was not able to arrange it that beautifully. I hope you forgive me. :-) |
I made this dessert myself a few weeks ago.
It is a pancake made out of tapioca flour. The flour that I made it out of is specially made for making these pancakes because it is quite moist. You put a few spoons of this flour to a hot pan and in a 1-2 minutes you have your pancake. It can be served with fruit and nutella (as I did) or with salty ingredients like meat, beans etc.
The taste of the pancake is quite specific. The first time I tried it I didn't like it much. It was very sticky and sour. However, I grew to love it and I hope that I will be able to make a salty version soon.
I hope I have awaken your sweet tooth and you will soon run to your local Brazilian store to buy some of there, or, if you don't have a Brazilian shop yourself, you can make Doce de leite or Tapioca doce yourself.
Let me know in the comments what your favourite Brazilian sweets and desserts are and I will be happy to try them and recommend them to others.
Have a nice evening you all!
I will talk to you soon again.
Julie xoxo
